THE EXPLOITED // Les Foufounes Électriques, Montréal, Canada
The Exploited’s long-awaited return to Montreal at Les Foufounes Électriques was nothing short of a punk rock spectacle. Having not played in the city for several years, the band’s absence was particularly noted after their infamous cancelled gig that caused a riot. This show, on the other hand, was a triumphant return. Frontman Wattie Buchan, ever the firebrand, mentioned during the performance that it was “one of the best gigs they have played.” Given the intensity of both the band and the crowd, it wasn’t hard to see why.
Les Foufounes Électriques, one of Montreal’s most iconic venues, provided the perfect setting for the explosive energy of The Exploited. The venue’s raw, industrial aesthetic, with graffiti-covered walls and dark, underground vibes, created an intimate and chaotic atmosphere that matched the band’s aggressive style. Known as a hub for alternative music since the 1980s, “Foufounes” is small enough to feel personal but large enough to contain a thrashing punk crowd.
Despite the years that have passed since their last attempt to play Montreal, The Exploited came out swinging with their signature brand of fast, loud, and unapologetically aggressive punk. The mosh pit was relentless, fueled by the band’s ferocious delivery of classics like “Sex & Violence” and “Punk’s Not Dead.” Wattie, despite his health struggles in recent years, led the charge with his trademark snarl, rallying the crowd and making it clear that The Exploited hasn’t lost any of their bite.
For longtime fans, this gig was a reminder of why The Exploited remains a cornerstone of the punk scene. For Montreal, it was the explosive return they had been waiting for, proving that punk, and The Exploited, are very much alive and well.
